Behenji or Madam ?

A few days back our news channels were bombarded with the Breaking news (I agree as the times have changed and somehow at any time of the day I only find that one or the other news is breaking, well that’s a different story of which we will get hold of some other day) and the bandwagon had to tell us that The Government of India had approved 51% FDI in the Multi-Brand sector.

Well as Economics and I, both have high regards for each other but we have hardly understood each other so I could not understand the decry and in my own placidity thought it would still generate employment and each one of us love to shop under one roof than how could it be a bad choice. Even if Wal-Mart, Carrefour won’t be given the grounds to set the foreign game we still have Big Bazar (even in small cities), Landmark Group, Shoppers’ Stop had long been playing the Indian gulli-danda or even Hockey for more sophistication and successful like our very own ‘Cricket’. While thinking about the stores I remembered something.

The days we used to wear little frocks and our brothers in shorts .Disney and Barbie clothesline had not yet arrived and we were called by the names of Gudiya ,Choti ,Chotu ,baby and baba and our parents were like their relatives by warmly being called as Bhai sahab and Bhabhiji or even Behenji (it’s socially distasteful now). The days our Kirana stores (mom and pop stores) were all we had as we simply had to buy and not too much thinking about organic sections, exotic sections or the imported ones. We were not Sirs and Madams and we were not paying for the carry-bags and Visual Merchandising was not a career. The days when a family of four was comfortable on Bajaj scooters and Cars were sybaritic.

Today Humara Bajaj is out and it’s about Nano 2012 or Aakash the economical tablet for easy browsing and all these are Indian Brands but we do love our Dominoz , Zara Stores ,iPhone and we like it it even better when all comes from one entrance and one exit with pleasing staffs to help us out fill our trolleys and baskets. It’s not about foreign but about choosing what we want and how we want it. Nevertheless , even if we have KFC we don’t miss our tantalising Pani-Puri ‘s at the thelka.
